A founder does not need to announce retirement to examine whether a business can continue making routine decisions without constant intervention. Lucas Atanazio, entrepreneur and founder of ATNZO, proposes a limited exercise in this authored commentary on leadership and continuity.
“Choose one meeting, process or category of routine decisions. Define who is responsible, what information they need and which exceptions still require support. The purpose of a planned absence is to observe the system, not to leave people alone with an undefined risk.”
“Look at the decisions that stopped. Was the customer commitment stored only in a private conversation? Did the responsible person lack authority? Was the procedure out of date? Each answer points to a different repair.”
“Returning to take over everything can make the exercise pointless. Review the result, improve the conditions and repeat the test. Leadership is visible in the team's ability to understand and carry a responsibility, not only in the founder's speed at answering questions.”
The proposal is operational preparation. Legal ownership transfers, individual succession arrangements and financial decisions require their own analysis. The immediate task is narrower: make one part of the business less dependent on information and judgement that only one person can access.
